JG Tax and Legal
Boutique tax & law · Melbourne
Legal and tax advice, brought together when it counts.
JG Tax and Legal is a boutique practice offering two capabilities under one roof: commercial and private-client law, and tax law.
The firm
Two disciplines, brought together when they're needed.
Some matters relate to commercial law while some relate to tax law. But many sit across both. A business sale, a family trust, a property holding, structuring or restructuring, a deceased estate: these often carry legal consequences and also tax implications, and they are better handled together.
When a matter calls for it, our commercial and tax lawyers work side by side, so the legal documents and the tax position are considered as one. When it doesn't, you simply get clear, focused advice in the area you need, and we will always tell you when a matter would benefit from the other.

→Estate planning

Common questions
Before you enquire
Do I need to leave my accountant to work with you?
Absolutely not. We work collaboratively with your existing accountant and advisers. We handle the commercial law and tax law work and keep your accountant in the loop; the day-to-day relationship stays where it is.
What makes a tax and legal firm different from a general law firm?
In many matters the legal and tax implications are inseparable. We can advise on both together, so you are not relaying messages between your lawyer and tax lawyer or discovering a tax problem after the transaction.
What if I don't need both a commercial lawyer and a tax lawyer?
Many don't. Our teams can operate together or independently; it depends on what your matter calls for.
What if you don't specialise in the area that I need?
That's okay. Although our practice is broad, we do not specialise in all areas of law. Above all else, we pride ourselves on being helpful. If we cannot be helpful, we will find you someone who can.
Do you act for both businesses and private clients?
Yes. We act for business owners and companies on commercial, structuring and transaction matters, and for individuals, families and private groups on estate planning, wills, property and related tax matters.
I'm an accountant looking to refer to you, am I at risk of you taking my clients?
No. Accountants and advisers are among our key clients, and we are protective of that relationship. We do not, and will never, offer tax compliance services, the client relationship remains with you, and we return your client to you. We are here to deepen your relationship with your client, not to replace you.
How are your fees structured?
We discuss scope and fees at the outset so you know what to expect. Depending on the matter we offer fixed fees or an estimate against hourly rates.
Where are you based?
We are based in Melbourne and act for clients all around Australia. Meetings can be held in person or by video.
